Yoga's long history has seen many dedicated students of yoga journey down a path to better health, increased peace of mind, broader self understanding, and, for some who choose to venture into the full depths of practice, profound spiritual meaning. In the west, more people than ever are turning to yoga as a way to cope with the struggles of life. Yoga can be a powerful tool, but not all yoga is safe or sensitive to individuals who have experienced trauma or are struggling with mental-emotional health challenges. This class will provide a safe space for learning and experiencing yoga.

  • Class will begin with a brief outline of how Trauma Sensitive Yoga Teachers define trauma and why it's important to recognize that special considerations are necessary for yoga to have a beneficial effect.
  • We all experience various degrees of mental-emotional challenge or trauma throughout our lives; some of us struggle with lasting effects from old traumas and, for some, the trauma is fresh.
  • Throughout the class, we will explore simple grounding techniques, body-centered mindfulness exercises, and yoga shapes that may help new and experienced yoga students better manage the side effects of trauma.
  • If you have never practiced yoga, please arrive 20 minutes early so you can have a brief discussion with the instructor.
  • There will be no music and no physical assists involving touch given by the teacher during this class.
  • Please aim to bring or borrow a yoga mat to attend. A small selection of mats will be available for new students. Participants are also encouraged to bring a cozy blanket or a bath towel for extra comfort in some poses.
